TEMPE, Ariz. – From Mott, N.D., to No. 1 in the nation.
North Dakota State University senior javelin thrower
Alyssa Olin broke her own school record on three consecutive attempts to open the season Friday evening, ultimately posting the nation's top mark in the event this year at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational.
On her third throw of the day, Olin uncorked a remarkable toss of 191-6 (58.36m) – an improvement of 17 feet over her previous school record. She won the meet by more than 20 feet, but that might have been the least impressive fact about her performance.
Her mark would have won every NCAA title in the javelin from 2011 through 2014. And although it's early in the outdoor season, Olin now ranks ninth in the world this year.
For the 2017 season, Olin's throw would have ranked her third among all American women – professionals included.
Olin was not the only Bison thrower altering the record books on the first day of the season.
Junior
Maddy Nilles opened her outdoor season with a monster throw of 209-0 (63.70m) in the hammer throw for a runner-up finish. That mark was a personal-best by six and a half feet, and it ranks her second in NDSU history.
Bison sophomore
Amy Herrington moved up to fifth all-time at NDSU in the hammer throw, recording a personal-best 194-7 (59.32m) for fifth place on Friday. Junior
Shelby Gunnells took sixth with a mark of 192-11 (58.82m).
Sophomore
Bailey Retzlaff threw a personal-best 186-3 (56.78m) to finish ninth in the meet and enter the NDSU all-time top 10 at No. 8.
Behind Olin, NDSU had three more placewinners in the javelin. Sophomore
Keyawna Larson took fourth at 147-7 (44.98m), senior
Kayla Hochhalter was fifth at 145-10 (44.44m), and freshman
Kari Wolfe placed seventh with a throw of 143-2 (43.64m). Wolfe now ranks ninth all-time at NDSU in the javelin following her collegiate debut.
Competition at the Baldy Castillo Invitational will conclude on Saturday.
