Gunnells Unleashes Huge Throws to Lead Bison Women at SDSU Classic

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Junior thrower Shelby Gunnells posted significant personal-best marks in the shot put and weight throw to headline the performances of the North Dakota State women's track & field team at the SDSU Indoor Classic on Saturday.
Gunnells (Solon, Iowa) threw a career-best 55-05.50 (16.90m) to win the shot put and rank 12th in the NCAA this season. After Saturday's 16-inch improvement, she is now No. 2 in NDSU indoor history.
The Bison women swept the top six places in the shot put with Akealy Moton second (53-05.00 / 16.28m), Bailey Retzlaff third (51-05.75 / 15.69m), and Kelsey Laufenberg fourth (48-03.50 / 14.72m).
Retzlaff posted a huge personal-best in the weight throw, improving by two and a half feet to 69-04.00 (21.13m). She climbed the national performance list to No. 19 in the NCAA this year. Retzlaff is now second all-time at NDSU in the weight, behind only teammate Maddy Nilles, who threw 69-00.00 (21.03m) for second place Saturday.
Gunnells hit another big personal-best in the weight throw as well, throwing 62-00.50 (18.91m) to rank eighth in NDSU history. It was a 15-inch improvement over her previous best mark.
Bison sophomore Kelby Anderson ran a personal-best 4:46.22 to win the mile and rank No. 4 in NDSU history. Annika Rotvold was the runner-up in 4:51.24, and Jen Dufner was fifth in 5:00.01.
Bison sophomore Michaela Baker clocked a personal-best 8.56 seconds in the semifinals of the 60m hurdles, ranking third in NDSU history behind All-Americans Deborah John and Whitney Carlson.
After winning the long jump on Friday, NDSU's Bailey DeMar won the triple jump Saturday with a mark of 39-08.50 (12.10m). Bison freshman Jodi Lipp took third at 37-11.25 (11.56m).
Junior Klara Lyon cleared 12-06.75 (3.83m) for a runner-up finish in the pole vault.
Sophomore Alyssa Lind ran an indoor 400m PR of 57.19 for fourth place. Freshman Grace Zimmerman clocked a season-best 57.73 for eighth.
Senior Dakota Wood advanced to the 60m hurdles finals, running a season-best time of 8.89 seconds.
