North Dakota State University, with the lowest winning point total in nearly two decades, outdistanced host Nebraska Omaha to win the 1988 NCAA Division II national championship...The Bison advanced three wrestlers into the championship finals with Rick Goeb's victory at 126 pounds giving NDSU the necessary margin to win by 6 ΒΌ points...Dave Calliguri was the runner-up at 118 pounds and Matt Palmer placed second at 190 pounds for NDSU...The Bison had entries in 9 of 10 weight classes including Dan Collins (134), Jeff Ocel (142), Bourck Cashmore (150), Gene Green (158), Pat Johannes (177) and Ellis Wojciehowski (heavyweight)...Calliguri, Goeb, Johannes and Palmer went on to the Division I national tournament at Iowa State, where Palmer went 2-2 and Johannes went 3-2 to place seventh...Head coach Bucky Maughan completed his 24th season at the helm of the Bison with an 11-1 record in dual meets...NDSU edged out Omaha by five points to win its eighth North Central Conference championship, and the 1988 title was the seventh in a string of nine straight titles by Bison teams.
