After coming to NDSU to play basketball, Bunker liked what he saw in North Dakota and stayed on to become one of the university's leading alumni and one of the state's most popular politicians. Joined the Bison in 1949 after a season at the University of Wyoming. Led NDSU in scoring in 1952 and earned all-conference honors. He also was named to several other area honor teams, and that year scored 21 points for a college all-star team that played a professional quintet. A veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, he was the Speaker of the House during the 1973 legislative assembly and served on or chaired several major legislative committees.
