Served 10 years as NDSU’s faculty representative to the North Central Conference and NCAA from 1988 to 1998...Remained with the athletic department as an academic advisor for 10 years after retirement, establishing a computer center and study room for student-athletes in the former Bison Sports Arena...Member of the NDSU faculty from 1968 to 1999...Promoted through the ranks to professor of biochemistry...Became the dean of the College of Science and Mathematics in 1986 until 1998 when he served one year as NDSU’s interim president in 1998-99...Also served interim positions as the vice president of academic affairs in 1990-91 and vice president for university advancement in 1992-93...Recognized by Mortar Board with the Outstanding Academic Adviser award in the College of Science and Mathematics in 1985...Received the campus-wide Blue Key Distinguished Educator award in 1989 and Doctor of Service award in 1999...Served as director of the Governor’s School in Science and Mathematics...A native of Staten Island, N.Y., he earned a bachelor’s degree from Waynesburg College (Pa.), and a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University...After earning his doctorate in chemistry from Indiana University, he held a two-year post-doctoral appointment in chemistry at the University of Minnesota...Married for 51 years to Naomi Fischer, who passed away due to cancer in 2007...Has two children, Jeffrey and Linda, four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter...Remarried to Elsie Fischer.
