    Wiegandt was a fiery performer for NDSU football teams in 1963, 1964 and 1965, and was team captain in 1964 and 1965. An All-NCC selection in 1965, he played linebacker for NDSU’s national champions when the Bison defeated Grambling in the Pecan Bowl. In 1965, his senior year, he was the recipient of the Dennis Drews Award as the team's Most Valuable Player and was honorable mention Little All-America. He served as the defensive coordinator for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League.
