A native of Stillwater, Minn., he was a two-year starter for the Bison for on the gridiron. A three-year letterman on the baseball field, he graduated from NDSU with a degree in physical education in 1949, one of the first to be accorded that major at the school, and obtained a master's degree from St. Cloud (Minn.) State in 1964. His coaching career, from 1949 to 1983, is legendary. Roy received the Minnesota Football Coaches Distinguished Service Award in 1992. He managed the Coach of the Year Football Clinic in Minneapolis, one of the top such clinics in America, for 19 years, working with legendary figures Bud Wilkinson and Duffy Daugherty.
