One of the pioneers of women’s athletics at North Dakota State, Schmidt competed in basketball and volleyball at NDSU at the beginning of those intercollegiate sports. She played both sports her final three years and served as co-captain and earned Most Valuable Player of the volleyball team in 1967 and 1968. Her basketball career included winning the MVP award in 1968-69 as a senior. She began and coached the Fergus Falls (Minn.) High School volleyball team from 1978 to 1985 and started the girls’ varsity softball team in 1992. Schmidt received the Fergus Falls Teacher of the Year Award in 1984 and was inducted into the Fergus Falls Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
