A native of North Dakota and the first North Dakota State University alumnus to serve as president of the university, he guided NDSU for 19 years before his death in 1987. Assuming the presidency in 1968, Loftsgard presided over a period of unparalleled athletic success at NDSU. The Bison won six national football championships, one national cross country title and numerous other athletic championships. He presided over a period of unmatched academic and facility growth on campus. Loftsgard was named the North Central Conference Hall of Fame in 1979.
