1977 Associated Press All-America second team...1976 AP All-America honorable mention...1977 NCC Most Valuable Defensive Back...Two-time All-NCC first team linebacker in 1976 and 1977...NDSU team captain in 1977 and recipient of the Dennis Drews Trophy as the team’s Most Valuable Player...NCC Defensive Player of the Week in 1976...Academic All-NCC in 1977...Finished third at NDSU with 320 total tackles...His 250 assisted tackles were third most and still tied for seventh...Made 23 tackles against Mankato State in 1975, one shy of the school record at the time and still fourth most by a Bison player in a single game...Led the Bison in tackles in both 1976 (120) and 1977 (136)...Played football, hockey and baseball for Fairmont High School (Minn.)...Earned a bachelor’s degree in social science education at NDSU and later a master’s degree in secondary education administration from Northern Michigan...Began his coaching career in 1979 at Shanley High School in Fargo before moving to the college ranks...Was an assistant coach at Northern Michigan (1981-86), Western Michigan (1987-91), Cincinnati (1992-95), Minnesota (1996), Boston College (1997-98) and Notre Dame (1999-2000)...Special teams coordinator in the NFL from 2001 until retirement after the 2018 season...Had the NFL’s top-rated special teams unit five of his six seasons with Cleveland Browns (2001-06) and worked with Pro Football Hall of Fame kicker Morten Andersen on the Atlanta Falcons (2007) before spending 11 seasons as special teams coordinator and associate head coach with head coach John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens (2008-18), where he was part of three division titles and the 2012 team that won Super Bowl 47...Coached eight Pro Bowl players in his career...Has a proven track record of selecting and developing talent...Four placekickers and five long snappers in the NFL in 2022 came into the league as free agents under his recruitment and training...He and his wife, Sherry, have three children...Megan is the assistant to the head coach for the Baltimore Ravens, Jerad is a professional hockey player with the Dallas Stars, and Margaret is a registered nurse.
