The key blocking back for All-America backfield mates Paul Hatchett and Tim Mjos, Roller started in the Bison backfield that helped NDSU to national championships in 1968 and 1969. Although seldom used to carry the ball, he responded with a pair of 100-yard peformances against Northern Arizona (128 in 1969) and Morningside (125 in 1968). He played basketball at NDSU for several seasons as a reserve guard and went on to be a successful high school football coach in North Dakota at New England, St. Mary's and Devils Lake
