Called the “Man Mountain of Moorhead,” Sturgeon was NDSU's first giant of the gridiron charging from his tackle post at 280 pounds. Besides his strength on both the offensive and defensive lines, he was also a great punter. Proved his talent and endurance when he played 43 minutes at tackle for the West squad in the East-West game of 1936. Sturgeon, who also performed place-kicking chores for the Bison, was mentioned on several All-America checklists. Received professional offers from the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cardinals and New York Giants. Lineman for the Packers in 1937 and 1938.
