One of the premier distance runners in the nation during the latter half of the 1970s, Bollman captured 10 North Central Conference championships in cross country and track. He won both the NCC and the NCAA Division II national championship in cross country in 1977. He was a three-time All-American in track, where he finished second in the nation in the 1,500 meters twice including a classic battle with world contender Steve Scott in the 1977 outdoor national championships at NDSU. He was named the North Dakota College Athlete of the Year in 1977-78 after winning the national cross country crown. He worked as a mechanic with the 3M Company in the Twin Cities.
