While a knee injury prevented Sand from competing in football, this Norweigan farm lad became the first North Dakota State track and field athlete to gain national recognition. At one time, Sand held four records in the North Central Conference in the 100-yard dash (:09.9), the 220-yard dash (:21.4), the long jump (21-11), and the low hurdles. In 1931, he was placed on the All-America honor roll, the first athlete from North Dakota and only the second in the four-state NCC to be so honored. Sand was an engineer with Bakelite Corporation until organizing his own consulting practice
