An outstanding basketball player for North Dakota State, Saunders twice earned all-conference honors. He was a teacher-coach at North Dakota State University at Bottineau from 1937 until entering the U.S. Army in 1942. He was discharged as an infantry major in 1946 and went into private business. Active in civic affairs, Saunders served on the Bottineau City Council eight years, including two as its president, and also served many years on the Park Board.
