An All-North Central Conference first-team end, Westgate was on the Bison football roster in 1929, 1930 and, after three years of Army duty, again in 1935. He also kicked extra points and punted. Established a Bison and NCC record in the javelin (200-feet, 11-inches) in 1936. That stood as a NDSU record for more than 30 years. Worked 20 years as a construction engineer from Panama to Alaska to England to the Phillipines, returning to North Dakota in 1954 as assistant state engineer. Founded a construction company in 1956 and added a supply company in 1959. Westgate drew the plans for the Dacotah Field football stadium that was dedicated in 1938.
