WATERLOO, Iowa--North Dakota State took advantage of four unearned runs and won its first Division I baseball game of the season 8-5 against Northern Iowa at Riverfront Stadium on Saturday, April 23.
Northern Iowa (15-22) committed four errors in the ballgame, and one in the top of the first led to three unearned Bison runs.
With two outs, Kole Zimmerman reached on an error by Northern Iowa third baseman Dave Westergaard, and the Bison capitalized. Matt Freudenthal followed with a single to score Nathan Thomas, and Reid Arnold followed with a double into right-center field to score Zimmerman and Freudenthal.
North Dakota State (3-30-1) tacked on another unearned run in the third inning to go up 4-0.
Leadoff hitter Matt Mossey reached on another Westergaard error at third base, and Mossey scored with two outs when Arnold reached on an error by UNI shortstop Patrick Moran.
Freudenthal's first collegiate home run, a solo shot to right field in the top of the sixth, put the Herd up 5-0.
After UNI scored a pair of runs in the sixth to chase Bison starter Derek Ford, NDSU countered with RBI doubles by Tim Erickson and Mossey in the seventh for a 7-2 lead.
A run-scoring double by Bison outfielder Greg Plecki made it 8-2 before the Panthers rallied in the bottom of the ninth against Bison reliever Shane Bushland.
An error by NDSU third baseman Ryan Langlais with two outs scored Clayton Daniels and pinch hitter Curt Bradley, and Westergaard singled home Moran with a third unearned run to make it 8-5.
Right-handed closer Neil Wagner came on to strike out cleanup hitter Nate Trumm on four pitches and strand two runners for his first save of the year. Wagner took over sole possession of the NDSU record with his 16th career save.
Freudenthal finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Seven other Bison players hit safely and the team had four doubles in the game.
Ford worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out four. He improved to 1-1 on the year.
UNI starter Zach Jevne went 6 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs (three earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out five. Jevne dropped to 2-5.
