Box Score FARGO, N.D.--Northern Arizona University scored the last six points in overtime to defeat North Dakota State University 55-50 in a non-conference women's basketball game played Sunday, Nov. 19, before a crowd of 1,319 at the Bison Sports Arena.
North Dakota State (0-2) is scheduled to play the University of Texas-Arlington (2-1) at 6 p.m. (Central) Friday, Nov. 24, in the opening round of the Montana State University Wingate Inn Thanksgiving Classic in Bozeman. The Mavericks lost at No. 17 Michigan State 65-49 on Sunday.
Northern Arizona (2-2) took the lead for good at 51-50 with 1:11 left on an Alyssa Wahl jumper. The Lumberjacks extended the margin to 53-50 on a Katie Schafer to Wahl play inside. Kim Winkfield connected on two free throws with 9 seconds left to seal the win.
The Bison had taken a 50-49 lead with 1:59 remaining when Jerri Penley hit a layup after receiving a pass from Kayla Dahlen. Penley, a 6-2 sophomore from Willis, Mich., recorded a career-high 12 points and nine rebounds in the loss. She was the only NDSU player scoring in double-figures.
However, NDSU missed four shots from the field and a pair of free throws down the stretch.
Free throw shooting hurt North Dakota State during the contest. The Bison connected on just 11 of 29 from the foul line for 37.9 percent compared to 60 percent for Northern Arizona. Both teams shot under 40 percent from the field and combined for 44 turnovers in the defensive-minded contest. NAU held a 42-41 advantage in rebounding with Wahl snaring a game-high nine.
North Dakota State led 24-22 at halftime, but fell behind by seven at 40-33 with 7:52 remaining in the second half. The Bison received a shot in the arm from freshman Inger Hodgson and sophomore Ali Sonstelie to whittle down the lead. A pair of Sonstelie free throws gave the Bison a 47-46 lead with 2:34 left.
NAU's Sade Cunningham hit one of two free throws at the 1:53 mark to tie the game at 47-all. Both teams couldn't cash in during regulation's final two minutes.
Megan Porter led the Lumberjacks with 15 points. Winkfield and Wahl each added 12.
