Chmielewski Ties NDSU Home Run Record in 25-1 Win Over Jackson State

HAMMOND, La.--Melissa Chmielewski hit a pair of home runs to tie the school single-game record as North Dakota State University defeated Jackson State 25-1 on Friday, Feb. 13, in the opening game of the Hampton Inn Lion Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University. NDSU defeated Southeastern Louisiana 5-1 in the second game.

North Dakota State (2-0) is scheduled to play Grambling State (1-3) at 10 a.m., UT-Martin (4-0) at 3 p.m. and close out Classic play against Belmont University (1-0) at 5:30 p.m.

Chmielewski went 4 for 5 with two home runs, a double, four runs scored and six RBI against Jackson State (1-4). She tied the NDSU single-game for the second time in her career. Chmielewski has 20 career home runs and is sixth on the all-time charts.

North Dakota State led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the second before exploding for 10 runs to break the game open. Chmielewski had a two-run double in the second, a solo home run in the third and a two-run blast in the fourth.

Nine different Bison players have matched the single-game home run record on 13 occasions including Kelly Cantrell, who has done it twice in her career. Richel Briones also went deep for NDSU.

Ten different players scored and eight had at least one hit for NDSU, which also took advantage of eight walks and five JSU errors. The Bison finished with 21 RBI overall to break the previous school record of 20 set against Bluefield State (W.Va.) on March 16, 1998.

The Bison outhit Jackson State 18-4. Laurel Pipkin went 4 for 5 with three runs score, three RBI and a stolen base, while Elisa Victa went 3 for 5 with four RBI, three runs scored and a double.

Kim Westendorf (1-0) picked up the win for North Dakota State. She allowed four hits, struck out two and walked one in five innings of work.

North Dakota State jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings to beat Southeastern Louisiana (1-1). Cantrell lifted a sacrifice fly and Briones picked up a fielder's choice RBI to put the Bison ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first.

The Lions came back with Lauren Coniglio's run-scoring double with two outs in the top of the second.

NDSU answered back in the bottom of the second. Pipkin delivered a RBI-single, while Victa doubled in another run. Cantrell doubled down the left field line to chase home an insurance run in the fifth inning.

The Bison outhit Southeastern Louisiana 9-4 led by Pipkin's 2 for 3 effort that included two runs scored and a RBI. Chmielewski also had two hits in three at-bats.

Andi Padilla (1-0), who worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings, recorded the win. Padilla struck out six, walked four and allowed four hits over seven innings.
