Box Score 2 CEDAR CITY, Utah--Andi Padilla picked up the wins in both ends of a doubleheader as North Dakota State University swept host Southern Utah University 5-2 in 10 innings and 9-7 in the Summit League opener for both teams Friday, March 13, at Kathryn Bern Field.
North Dakota State and Southern Utah conclude the three-game series at noon Saturday, March 14. The Bison improved to 3-1 in extra innings this season.
Padilla, a senior righty from Chino, Calif., struck out a career-high eight batters and scattered eight hits over 10 innings. She faced 42 batters and hooked up in a pitcher's duel with SUU's Kristina Brooks (7-16). Brooks struck out 11 and allowed nine hits.
North Dakota State (12-7, 2-0 Summit) broke a 2-2 deadlock in the top of the 10th inning. Laurel Pipkin sent home three runs with an infield RBI single and a SUU throwing error.
Melissa Chmielewski led the Bison in the first game with a double and single, while Elisa Victa added a pair of hits. Jackie Currie contributed a pair of sacrifice bunts.
Southern Utah (8-17, 0-2 Summit) jumped out to early leads of 5-0 and 7-3 in the second game as Trish Clapham and Darlene Fernandez each homered, and Natalie McBurney delivered a two-run a double.
However, the Bison chipped away and scored six unanswered runs over the last four innings.
Pipkin, who had two hits in the nightcap, came through with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 7-all.
North Dakota State took advantage of a walk, the baserunning of pinchrunner Brittany Gutierrez and an error to push across the eventual game-winning run in top of the sixth inning.
Kelly Cantrell stroked a two-out, RBI-single in the top of the seventh to tack on an insurance run.
The Bison outhit the Thunderbirds 14-11 in the second game led by Chmielewski's 3 for 4 effort at the plate that including three runs batted in and a double. Cantrell was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI.
Padilla (9-3) pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Randi Parks and Kim Westendorf. Padilla had two strikeouts and issued no walks. Brooks picked up the loss for SUU.
