Padilla No-Hitter, Chimelewski Home Run Lift North Dakota State to Split With Creighton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OMAHA, Neb.--Creighton University and North Dakota State University traded shutouts -- the Blue Jays winning the first game 5-0 and the Bison taking the second 3-0 on Andi Padilla's no-hitter -- in a women's college softball doubleheader played Wednesday, March 18, at CU Sports Complex. NDSU snapped a four-game losing streak with the second game win.

North Dakota State (13-11, 2-1 Summit) is scheduled to play UMKC (5-18, 0-3 Summit) in a three-game Summit League series March 20-21 at Cleveland Park in Kansas City. NDSU and UMKC play a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday and a single-game at noon Saturday.

On the mound, Andi Padilla (10-5) recorded her first career no-hitter and the program's first since 2006 when Amber Garrett had a perfect game against Drake (2-26-06).

"It's an awesome feeling because Creighton is good-hitting team. I actually wasn't aware that I had a no-hitter going until (head coach) Darren (Mueller) told me at the end of the game. I couldn't have done it without solid defense behind me. They made some great plays and this no-hitter would not have been possible without them," said Padilla, a senior righthander from Chino, Calif. (Don Lugo H.S.)

"I was able to use both sides of the plate and keep them off-balance with my off-speed. My change-up was working pretty well and got me a lot of easy outs."

It was the 19th no-hit performance in the program's history. Padilla struck out six and walked three to pick up her second career shutout.

Melissa Chmielewski hit a two-run home run to right field in the first inning of the second game to provide a spark offensively and put NDSU ahead 2-0. It was Chmielewski's fifth home run of the season. She went 2 for 3 as the Bison outhit Creighton 6-1.

North Dakota State extended the lead to 3-0 in the second inning. Breanna Konz singled to lead off the frame, advanced to second on a Taylor Lynn sacrifice bunt and third on a ground out. Konz, who also went 2 for 3, scored on a wild pitch.

"We knew it would all come together eventually. Three out of the four previous games we lost could have easily gone either way, so we knew we weren't far off. We just have to keep getting better every game and trust in what we have. Also, I'm glad we were able to score some runs early in the game. It's always nice to have a little breathing room as a pitcher," said Padilla.

Creighton (12-8, 3-0 Missouri Valley) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning in game one. Sara Loeffelholz hit a three-run home run to highlight the first frame for the Blue Jays.

Laura Kratochvil hit a solo home run in the third inning to complete the scoring for Creighton. Kratochvil went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI.

Tara Oltman (9-5) fashioned a two-hit shutout, limiting the Bison to singles from Richel Briones in the fifth inning and Laurel Pipkin in the sixth. Oltman struck out seven and walked two.

Kim Westendorf (1-3) picked up the loss. She allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out two.
