Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo.--Andi Padilla tossed a perfect game and North Dakota State University scored seven times in the first inning to cruise to a 14-0 five-inning victory over host UMKC in a Summit League women's softball game played Saturday, March 21, at Cleveland Park. The Bison won all three games in the series.
North Dakota State (16-11, 5-1 Summit), which has won four in a row, is scheduled to play the University of Northern Iowa (17-7, 3-0 Missouri Valley) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Monday, March 30, at Cedar Falls. The Bison play at Iowa State (17-13, 0-0 Big 12) at 2 p.m. Tueday, March 31.
Padilla faced 15 batters over the five innings to record her second no-hitter of the week against UMKC (5-21, 0-6 Summit). She struck out one, issued no walks and the Bison finished with no errors. Padilla improved to 12-5 with three shutouts this season. Her 12 wins in 2009 match her win total over the past three seasons.
Padilla's diamond gem was the eighth perfect game in the program's history and first since Amber Garrett's seven-inning no-hitter against Drake on Feb. 26, 2006. Her no-hitter was the 20th in the program's history. Earlier in the week Padilla no-hit Creighton University.
The Bison took advantage of four hits, three walks and an UMKC error to score seven times in the first inning. Melissa Chmielewski stroked a RBI double, while Richel Briones, Breanna Konz and Nicole Rivera each had run-scoring singles. Brittney Gutierrez also knocked in a run with a ground out.
North Dakota State pounded out 15 hits led by Chmielewski, who went 3 for 4 with four runs scored and three RBI on a double and home run. Chmielewski hit a two-run home run in the second inning, her team-leading sixth of the season.
Gutierrez came up with a career-high three RBI on a double and single, while Briones went 2 for 2 with a double and a run batted in. Kelly Cantrell went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and a double, while Taylor Mortensen had a two-run single in the fifth inning.
UMKC used three pitchers, Anna Sokolik, Samantha Hurst and Nicholle Ellis with Sokolik picking up the loss.
