North Dakota State Softball Gains Doubleheader Road Split at Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill.--Melissa Chmielewski hit a key two-run double and Andi Padilla recorded her second save as the season as North Dakota State University defeated Western Illinois University 4-2 in the second game and gain a split in a Summit League doubleheader Friday, April 17, at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. WIU won the first game 4-3.

North Dakota State (24-14, 12-2 Summit) and Western Illinois (20-16, 11-2 Summit) close out the three-game series with a single-game at noon Saturday, April 18.

Chmielewski, who went 2 for 3 in game two, rifled a double to left field with one out in the fifth inning to send a pair of runs home and tie the game at 2-2. Kelly Cantrell reached on an error and Elisa Victa scored, while Chmielewski crossed the plate on a Rachel Briones RBI single.

Padilla pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief of Bison starter Kim Westendorf (6-3). Westendorf worked the first 5.1 innings and allowed seven hits. She walked one and struck out one.

Ashley Campbell and Lauren Furgala each had a double for Western Illinois. Each team finished with seven hits. Lori Pankrantz and Campbell pitched for the Westerwinds with Pankrantz picking up the loss.

In the opener, Erin Schlotfeldt doubled to right center to drive in the game-winning run for Western Illinois with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Schlotfeldt went 2 for 3 with three RBI, while Jamie Goss had three hits in three plate apperances. WIU outhit the Bison 7-5.

Western Illinois pitcher Kamren Ferguson retired the last eight batters in row including Cantrell's sacrifice fly that tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning.

Ferguson allowed five hits and three unearned runs as the Westerwinds committed three errors. She walked one and struck out one. Padilla (16-8) recorded the loss for North Dakota State. Padilla walked two and struck out one.
