Konz, Padilla Lift North Dakota State to Road Split With Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind.--Breanna Konz delivered a two-run single in the seventh inning to lift North Dakota State University to a 2-1 win in game one against the University of Notre Dame as the Bison split a non-league doubleheader played on Wednesday, April 22, at Melissa Cook Stadium. The Fighting Irish won game two 5-0.

North Dakota State (25-16, 12-3 Summit) is scheduled to travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., for a three-game series with IPFW (14-18, 9-7 Summit) on April 24-25. The teams play a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday and close out the series with an 11 a.m. single-game Saturday.

Andi Padilla fired a three-hitter against Notre Dame (32-14), which received votes toward the NFCA Top 25 this week. Padilla, who improved to 17-9, struck out two and walked six in picking up the win.

Kelly Cantrell reached on a two-base fielding error to start the seventh inning. Cantrell moved to third on a Richel Briones sacrifice bunt. Taylor Mortensen reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second as Notre Dame kept Cantrell at third base.

Konz, who went 2 for 3, hit a 0-1 pitch into right field to knock in Cantrell and Mortensen.

Notre Dame scored its run in the first inning. Beth Northway doubled to left field, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Heather Johnson's sacrifice fly. Northway went 4 for 5 with a two runs scored in the doubleheader.

Brittney Bargar (18-9) picked up the loss for Notre Dame. Bargar allowed five hits, struck out three and issued no walks.

The Fighting Irish jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap and didn't look back. Notre Dame loaded the bases with one out and took advantage of a Bison error to score twice.

Notre Dame extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning on Linda Kohan's sacrifice fly. Kohan, who went 2 for 3, then added a two-run home run in the sixth inning to put the Fighting Irish ahead 5-0.

Jody Valdivia (14-5) fired a three-hit shutout to record the win for Notre Dame. Valdivia struck out six and walked five.

Kim Westendorf (6-4) had her five-game winning streak snapped. Westendorf allowed nine hits, walked three and had no strikeouts. Melissa Chmielewski led the Bison with a double and single.
