Box Score FARGO, N.D.--Caitlin Cavarra hit a pair of home runs and Centenary College hit three long balls overall to power past North Dakota State University 8-4 in a Summit League women's softball game played Saturday, May 2, before 117 spectators at the Ellig Sports Complex. The loss snapped a 12-game home winning streak for the Bison.
North Dakota State (32-17, 19-4 Summit) finish in second place in the Summit League regular season standings behind Western Illinois (31-17, 21-2 Summit). The pairings for the Summit League tournament to be played in Macomb, Ill., on May 8-9 will be officially announced Monday by the league office.
Cavarra led off the game with a home run and started a three-run first inning for Centenary (32-21, 13-9 Summit), which defeated the Bison for the first time in six meetings. Lindsey Smith and Allison McClain each added RBI singles in the frame.
The Ladies extended the lead to 5-0 in the top of the second. Jenny Varteressian delivered a two-out single to knock in a pair of runs.
North Dakota State broke the momentum briefly with Kelly Cantrell's solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 5-1. It was Cantrell's fifth home run of the season.
Centenary quickly answered in the top of the third as Katie Matthews homered to lead off the inning. The Ladies closed out their scoring with a run in the fifth on McClain's second RBI single and Cavarra's second home run of the game in the top of the sixth.
NDSU made things interesting in the late innings but stranded 10 runners in the contest. Elisa Victa's fielder's choice chased one run to the plate in the sixth, while Cantrell laced a two-run double down the left field line in the seventh.
Kim Westendorf (10-5) and Randi Parks pitched for the Bison with Westendorf picking up the loss to end her eight-game winning streak in league play. The pair gave up 12 hits, walked three and struck out four.
Cantrell, who was one of four seniors making their last home appearance, went 2 for 2 with three RBI to pace NDSU's nine-hit attack. Taylor Mortensen had a double and single, and Taylor Lynn added a pair of hits.
Lauren Highsmith (1-2) recorded her first win of the season. Highsmith walked six and struck out two.
