North Dakota State cornerback Marcus Williams was named to the CollegeSportsMadness.com FCS All-America second team, while head coach Craig Bohl and three players -- offensive lineman Austin Richard, wide receiver/punt returner Ryan Smith and Williams -- earned the web site's Missouri Valley Football Conference honors.
North Dakota State (11-1) is scheduled to host Lehigh University (11-1) in a NCAA Division I FCS quarterfinal round game at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in the Fargodome.
Williams, a 5-foot-11, 186-pound, sophomore from Minneapolis, Minn. (Hopkins H.S.), leads the Valley and is tied for 3rd nationally with seven interceptions. He is one away from school record of eight set by Frank Esposito in 1953. Williams was a first-team All-MVFC, a MVFC Defensive Player of Week and a MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week selection this season.
Williams has scored three times on interceptions (including lateral from Colten Heagle at Minnesota) and once on kickoff return this season. He leads the Valley and is tied for fifth nationally in passes defended. Williams has 22 of 26 games in career with at least one pass defended. He had career-high nine tackles vs. Illinois State and vs. Youngstown State. Williams recorded two interceptions at Southern Illinois and at Western Illinois.
Bohl received Valley Football Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bison to a 7-1 record and conference championship. He has a 72-31 career record in nine seasons including a 5-3 record against FBS teams. Bohl received the league's Bruce Craddock Coach of the Year award and was named the AFCA Region 4 FCS Coach of the Year on Dec. 6.
Richard, a 6-foot-4, 314-pound, senior from Fargo, N.D. (South H.S.), has started in 39 of 47 games played during career. The versatile performer has played left guard, left tackle and center this season. Richard is a four-time MVFC Offensive Lineman of the Week during his career including twice in 2011. He was named to the All-MVFC second team this season.
Smith, a 5-foot-7, 174-pound, sophomore from Wahpeton, N.D. (Wahpeton H.S.), is
averaging 85.6 all-purpose yards per game. He has returned 23 punts for 250 yards (10.9 avg/r) and one TD, a 41-yard score at South Dakota State, which earned him MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Smith leads the Valley and ranks 13th nationally in punt returns. Smith has 40 receptions for 471 yards, averaging 11.8 yards per reception and 42.8 yards per game. He caught a season-high seven passes at Indiana State and has made at least one reception in 11 games played.
