Bison Women Prepare for NCAA West Preliminary Round

FARGO, N.D. - Eight members of the North Dakota State women's track and field team will travel to Eugene, Ore. for the 2011 NCAA West Preliminary Round. Competition at Historic Hayward Field begins Thursday, May 26 and concludes Saturday, May 28. In both the East and West regions, the top 48 athletes in each event made the preliminary round and the top 12 will advance to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Bison in the NCAA preliminary round
Senior Whitney Carlson and redshirt freshman Antoinette Goodman will both compete in two individual events. Carlson will be aiming for her second straight trip to the NCAA Championships in the long jump and will also be competing in the 100 meter hurdles. Goodman makes her first trip to the NCAA preliminary round and will run the 100 meters and 200 meters. Senior Christine Schmaltz will compete in the 800 meters for the second straight year. She just missed out on a championship berth last season. Junior Leslie Brost will make her third trip to the NCAA preliminary round in the pole vault. She finished one spot out of the NCAA Championships last year. Sophomore Toni Tollefson will aim for her second straight trip to the NCAA Championships in the high jump. Sophomore Deborah John will join Carlson in the 100 meter hurdles. Junior Brittany Page and sophomore Ashley Tingelstad will run the 4x400 relay with Carlson and Goodman.

Bison sweep Summit League awards
Senior Whitney Carlson was named both Track Championship MVP and Field Championship MVP in a vote of the league's head coaches at the Summit League Championships. Carlson won four titles (100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, long jump, heptathlon) in her final Summit League meet. Freshman Katie Dockter earned Newcomer of the Championship honors after finishing second in the long jump and third in the triple jump. Head coach Ryun Godfrey picked up his fourth straigth outdoor Coach of the Year award.
NDSU wins fourth straight Summit League crown
The Bison racked up 241 points to claim their fourth consecutive outdoor league title on Saturday, May 14, becoming the first team in league history to accomplish the feat. Whitney Carlson led the way with four titles, while Antoinette Goodman (100m and 200m) and Christine Schmaltz (800m and 1,500m) won two apiece. Goodman's winning 100 meters time of 11.76 set a new school record. Leslie Brost won the pole vault and the Bison also took first in both the 4x100 and the 4x400 relays.
