CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--North Dakota State dropped a 5-4 decision to George Washington University in eight innings, then was no-hit by the Lori Spingola and the University of North Carolina 4-0 in two games at the Carolina Classic on Thursday, Feb. 21, at Anderson Stadium.

The weather will determine the remainder of the Carolina Classic schedule, as both of North Dakota State's games were moved up a day because of heavy rains moving into the area. The Bison (4-8) are scheduled to play Iona and Penn State.

Carlee Gray's RBI single with no outs in the eighth led George Washington (2-5) to the first game win. Gray finished with a pair of hits.

North Dakota State had tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jenna Isbel scored on an error with two outs.

The Bison led 2-1 after the first inning when Amanda Grable drilled a two-run double to left center.

However, the Colonials took advantage of a walk, a wild pitch, two hit batters and a pair of passed balls in the top of the second to regain the lead at 4-2.

NDSU trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the second inning when Alex Sobrero drew a bases loaded walk.

Marita Lopez-Portillo had a double and single to lead the Bison. Jenina Ortega and Presley Glaser each had two base hits.

Krista Menke, Tabby Bayers and Whitney Johnson pitched for the Bison with Johnson picking up the loss. Bayers struck out six, walked two and allowed one hit over 5-2/3 innings of relief.

Meghan Rico and Courtney Martin pitched for the Colonials with Martin picking up her first win in three decisions. Martin struck out eight, allowed five hits and walked two over the final six innings.

UNC's Spingola faced only 22 batters in throwing the first no-hitter against North Dakota State since Penn State did it at the Lady 'Back Invitational on Feb. 26, 2006. She struck out nine in improving to 5-3.

Johnson (3-4) matched her through the first five innings. She allowed only four hits, walked three and struck out nine.

The Tar Heels (8-5) exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Amber Parrish and Amy Nece each hit two-run home runs.
