AUSTIN, Texas – North Dakota State's Matt Tetzlaff kept his senior season alive on Friday evening at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Tetzlaff posted a time of 14.23 seconds in the first round of the 110m hurdles to earn a spot in Saturday's 24-man quarterfinals.
It was the second-fastest 110m hurdles race of the season for the Pierre, S.D., native. He'll race again at 7:20 p.m. Saturday evening in an attempt to claim one of 12 spots at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Tetzlaff, a three-time Summit League champion in the event, placed fourth in his heat and advanced as the second-fastest of six time qualifiers on Friday.
Brandt Berghuis wrapped up an outstanding freshman season with a throw of 53-06.25 (16.31m) to place 36th in the shot put. Berghuis entered the West Preliminary Rounds ranked 46th after setting the NDSU school record in the event at the Summit League Outdoor Championships on May 10.
Senior Casey Orgon was scheduled to compete in the hammer throw on Friday, but constant rain and seven hours of weather delays postponed the event until 10 a.m. on Saturday.
All running events were delayed three hours after heavy rain moved through the Austin area, meaning the final events stretched into the early hours of Saturday morning.
Freshman Tyler Parker will throw the javelin at noon on Saturday, joining Orgon and Tetzlaff in competition for NDSU.
