FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University women's soccer team (4-6-0, 0-1-0 Summit) dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the Western Illinois Leathernecks (2-9-0, 1-0-0 Summit) in the 2014 Summit League opener Friday night, Oct. 3, at Dacotah Field. The defeat was NDSU's sixth straight.
The Leathernecks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Amy Bennett netted a goal in the 29th-minute of the match. It marked Bennett's first goal of the season.
NDSU was able to level the match at one to start the second-half when
Jaclyn Scanlan directed a pass from
Anisha Kinnarath into the back of the net in the 46th-minute. It marked Scanlan's first goal of the season.
The match remained tied at one when the final horn sounded at the end of regulation, sending the match into a 10-minute, sudden-death overtime period.
Western Illinois netted the game-winning goal just five minutes into the extra time period after Sarah Wright scored her second goal of the season on a Tyra Markey assist in the 95th-minute.
For the match, NDSU outshot Western Illinois, 15-9, while each team tallied six corner kicks.

Sierra Bonham went the full 95 minutes in goal, making three saves, but dropped to 4-6-0 on the season after surrendering the game-winner. WIU goalie Victoria Kappel improved to 2-9-0 between the pipes after allowing one goal and making six saves.
NDSU is scheduled to continue Summit League play on Sunday, Oct. 5, at noon against IUPUI at Dacotah Field.
