TULSA, Okla. – The North Dakota State women's soccer team (8-7-2, 4-2-2 Summit League) completed the 2014 regular season with a 1-0 shutout victory at Oral Roberts (3-10-3, 2-5-0 Summit League) on Friday, Oct. 31, at the Case Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Bison clinched a spot in The Summit League Women's Soccer Championship, which will occur Nov. 6/8 in Denver, Colo., at Denver's CIBER Field. It's NDSU's sixth consecutive appearance in the tournament.
Sophomore forward
Lauren Miller broke a scoreless tie with the Golden Eagles in the 69th-minute and gave the Bison a 1-0 lead after she collected a ball that deflected off the goalpost on a shot from
Genna Joyce and hammered it into the back of the net from 15 yards out. It was Miller's team-high ninth goal of the season and Joyce's first assist.
The NDSU defense and goalkeeper
Sierra Bonham took over the remaining 21 minutes of the second-half and held the Golden Eagles scoreless, preserving the 1-0 triumph for the Bison.
Bonham ended the match with three saves and didn't allow a goal to pick up the win, finishing the regular season with a record of 8-7-2 in goal. The shutout marked her fifth of the season, a new career-high for the Red Deer, Alberta, native.
NDSU was outshot by ORU in the match, 17-11, but put five shots on goal compared to just four from the Golden Eagles.
Helen Erb took the loss in goal for Oral Roberts to fall to 3-6-1 on the season.
The complete bracket along with seeds for The Summit League Women's Soccer Championship will be revealed on Sunday, Nov. 2. NDSU will either be the three or four seed in the single-elimination tournament.
