TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --Â
Krista Menke tossed a 1-0 shutout past Southern Miss and host Florida State rallied with four runs to defeat North Dakota State 4-1 on Friday, Feb. 14, to complete the first day of the Renegade Classic played at JoAnne Graf Field.
North Dakota State (4-2) is scheduled to play Southern Miss (0-5) at 11 a.m. and the 12/13th-ranked Seminoles (6-1) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15.
Menke, a 5-foot-11 junior righthander from Friend, Neb., recorded her second shutout over the past three games and the 14th of her career against Southern Miss. She struck out seven, scattered six hits and walked two. Menke has allowed only one earned run over the last 21 innings pitched
Defense played a key role with a pair of double plays including the first inning when Menke recorded the strikeout and catcher
Jenina Ortega picked off the runner at first. The other in the second inning when third baseman
Amanda Grable and first baseman
Brandi Enriquez combined efforts.
The Bison scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Alex Sobrero doubled to left with one out. Sobrero moved to third on a ground out and scored on
Cheyenne Garcia's single up the middle. Ortega and Sobrero each finished 2 for 3 at the plate. Garcia, who also had a hit against FSU, extended her current hitting streak to nine games dating back to last season.
Samantha Robles led Southern Miss with a pair of hits. Shelbee Rodgers (0-2) picked up the loss. Rodgers struck out eight and walked three.
NDSU sophomore
Tabby Bayers and FSU's Lacey Waldrop hooked up in a pitcher's duel in the third game of the day. Bayers (1-1) limited the Seminoles to four hits, struck out three and walked three. Waldrop (3-1) was steady in scattering four hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Florida State rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Seminoles pushed across runs with a wild pitch and an illegal pitch before Victoria East's two-run double closed the deal. East went 2 for 3 for FSU.
North Dakota State scored its run in the top of the third. Sobrero laced a double down the left field line and scored on
Logan Moreland's RBI single to right center.
Jenna Isbel added a double for the Bison.
NDSU turned a pair of double plays to keep things close and push its season total to six in six games. Left fielder
Maritza Lopez-Portillo and Grable ended a threat in the fourth inning, while Bayers and Ortega combined on a strike'em out, throw'em out DP in the fifth.
