Menke, Stifter Lead Bison Softball to 11-0 Road Win at Southeast Missouri State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.--Krista Menke tossed her second career one-hitter and Jackie Stifter had three hits including a pair of doubles to lead North Dakota State University to an 11-0 win in five innings over host Southeast Missouri State University on Tuesday, March 18.

The Bison (16-9) are scheduled to play Ball State (14-9) at noon Friday, March 21, in the opening game of the Mizzou Tournament in Columbia, Mo. Ball State plays at Butler on Wednesday, March 19.

Menke, a 5-foot-11 junior from Friend, Neb., came within a pitch of her second career no-hitter. She had retired the first 14 batters in order until Redhawks' shortstop Leah Duffe reached on an infield single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Duffe worked the count to 3-ball and 2-strikes.

It was the 16th career shutout and fourth of the season for Menke, who improved to 11-3 with the win. She struck out nine of the 16 batters faced including all three in fifth inning.

Stifter, a 5-9 sophomore from Winsted, Minn., went 3 for 3 with three runs scored and a pair of doubles to spark NDSU's 13-hit attack. The Bison scored in four of five innings to reach double-figures for the fifth time this season. Six of Stifter's 12 hits this season have been for doubles.

Jenina Ortega started the scoring in the first inning with a two-run single up the middle. Cheyenne Garcia took care of things in the second inning with a bases loaded double to center field to extend the lead to 5-0.

North Dakota State scored five times in the top of the fourth inning  to break the game open and take a 10-0 lead. The Bison stroke six hits including a RBI double off the bat of Logan Moreland, an Amanda Grable two-run single and Brandi Enriquez RBI base hit. NDSU closed out the scoring in fifth when Stifter led off with a double and scored on a Moreland infield single.

Alex Sobrero, Moreland, Garcia and Grable each finished with two hits.

Hannah Durham (2-2), Aubrey Denno and Keaira Schilling pitched for Southeast Missouri State (5-9) with Durham picking up the loss. The trio combined to strike out five and walk two.
