Krista Menke tossed her second one-hitter of the season as North Dakota State University defeated South Dakota State University 12-0 in five innings Saturday, April 12, at Jackrabbits Softball Stadium to complete the Summit League series sweep.
NDSU (24-13, 7-1 SL) is scheduled to host Fort Wayne (29-12, 8-3 SL) in a three-game Summit League series April 18-19 at the Ellig Sports Complex. The Mastodons won two of three games against Omaha this weekend.
Menke, a 5-foot-11 junior righthander from Friend, Neb., retired the first 13 batters faced in order before KayCee Miller's one-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning. She struck out eight and issued no walks in recording her third career one-hitter. Menke, who improved to 18-5 overall, notched her fifth shutout this season and the 17th of her career.
The Bison offense sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the third inning and exploded for eight runs.
Cheyenne Garcia and
Jackie Stifter each stroked two-run singles to highlight the frame, while
Alex Sobrero,
Amanda Grable and
Jenna Isbel all came through RBI base hits.
Maritza Lopez-Portillo added a sacrifice fly to close out the scoring. Isbel had two hits in the inning.
North Dakota State tacked on three runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 11-0. The Bison have scored in double-figures eight times this season. Garcia laced a RBI double to left center and Stifter's ground out led to another run. NDSU took advantage of two SDSU errors to score runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Bison finished with 12 hits with
Logan Moreland, Sobrero, Garcia and Isbel each contributing two. Garcia and Stifter both had three RBI, while
Jenina Ortega, Moreland and Garcia each scored two runs.
Jennifer Sutton, Ashlyn Bender and Katie Lang all pitched for SDSU with Sutton (3-11) taking the loss.
