North Dakota State (25-14, 8-2 SL) and Fort Wayne (30-13, 9-4 SL) are scheduled play at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 20, to close out the three-game series.
Moreland, a sophomore shortstop from Woodland, Calif., lined an 0-1 pitch into the right field stands to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning. She went 3-for-5 in the opener as the Bison collected eight hits but stranded seven baserunners. It was Moreland's fifth home run of the season.
Cheyenne Garcia and
Jenna Isbel each had two hits for NDSU.
Menke, a sophomore from Friend, Neb., struck out a career-high 14 and walked three against the Mastodons to improve to 19-5. She reached double-figures in strikeouts for the third time this season and fifth time in her career. Menke limited Fort Wayne to an Alex Bousquet one-out single in the sixth inning. It was her third one-hitter of the season and fourth of her career.
Menke worked out of serious trouble several times in the contest as the Mastodons left six runners on base. Fort Wayne put the lead-off hitter on base in the seventh, but catcher
Jenina Ortega picked off the baserunner at first. The Mastodons had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth, but foul outs to third baseman
Amanda Grable and left fielder
Maritza Lopez-Portillo ended the threat.
Fort Wayne starter Miranda Kramer (15-8) was impressive as well. Kramer racked up 15 strikeouts including six straight in the fifth and sixth innings. She also worked out of sticky situations. A strikeout ended the Bison eighth inning with runners on second and third with two outs. NDSU advanced runners to second and third with one out in the ninth, but a pair of punch-outs ended the rally.
Things started quickly for Fort Wayne in game two, which sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four times in the top of the first inning. Alex Bousquet led off with a double as the Mastodons took advantage of three hits, three walks and an error. Asleigh Bousquet's fielder's choice pushed the first run, Hillary Kartman had a sacrifice fly and Caitlyn Delong laced a two-run single to left.
Alex Sobrero led off North Dakota State's bottom of the first with a home run to center field to cut the deficit to 4-1. Lopez-Portillo delivered an RBI single in the fourth inning to trim the lead to 4-2 before a double play ended the rally.
However, Fort Wayne extended the lead to 7-2 in the top of the sixth inning on RBI singles from Dani Pugh, Ashleigh Bousquet and Kartman. The Mastodons finished with 11 hits. Alex Bousquet went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Pugh went 3-for-5 with a RBI.
NDSU scratched out a couple of runs on a Lopez-Portillo sizzling single off the third baseman in the sixth and a wild pitch in the seventh. Lopez-Portillo went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI to account for half of the Bison hits.
Megan Flenniken (15-5) struck out 12 and overcame six walks to pick up the win for Fort Wayne. She allowed only four hits.
Tabby Bayers (4-7) and
Katie Thun pitched for NDSU with Bayers picking up the loss. Thun turned a solid relief appearance, striking out seven and walking five over 6.1 innings pitched.
