INDIANAPOLIS – The North Dakota State University women's soccer team (11-5-1, 6-0-1 Summit League) clinched a share of its first Summit League women's soccer regular season title since 2009 and the top seed in The Summit League Women's Soccer Championship with a 2-1 victory at IUPUI (6-9-2, 1-5-1 Summit League) on Friday, Oct. 30, at Carroll Stadium in downtown Indianapolis.
"I'm very proud of this group. We set a goal, and tonight we accomplished that goal," NDSU head coach
Mark Cook said. "IUPUI gave us one heck of a game, and we found a way to grind out a tough win. That is the sign of a quality team, and now we can call ourselves Summit League champions."
Lauren Miller scored both goals in the match for the Bison to tie her with former NDSU student-athlete Nicole VandenBos (1999) for most goals in a single season with 15.
Goalkeeper
Sierra Bonham tallied eight saves between the pipes and went the full 90 minutes in goal to tally the win and improve to 11-5-1 on the season.
Miller, a native of Saint Louis Park, Minn., put the Bison up 1-0 less than four minutes into the match when she fired a shot into the top right corner of the goal.
The Jaguars responded, though, tying the match, 1-1, with a goal in the 35th-minute off a rebound.
The match remained deadlocked until the 64th-minute when Miller corralled
Amy Yang's pass and fired it into the lower right corner of the net to give NDSU a 2-1 advantage.
NDSU held IUPUI scoreless the remaining 26 minutes to seal the victory.
With the assist, Yang increased her season total to nine – the third-highest total for a single season in program history.
For the match, IUPUI outshot NDSU, 22-19, but the Bison edged the Jaguars in corner kicks, 5-2. Both teams tallied eight saves in the contest.
IUPUI goalkeeper Catherine Schmidt matched Bonham with eight saves in 90 minutes in goal, but took the loss to fall to 6-8-2 overall.
North Dakota State is scheduled to close out the 2015 regular season on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. at Western Illinois.
