OMAHA, Neb. – An offensive surge in the third quarter helped the Omaha Mavericks defeat the North Dakota State women's basketball team, 77-52, in The Summit League opener for both teams on Wednesday evening, Dec. 30, in front of 506 spectators at Baxter Arena.

Marena Whittle tallied a double-double for the fourth consecutive game with 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead NDSU (5-9 overall, 0-1 Summit).
After the Bison took a 34-33 lead going into halftime, the Mavs (8-5 overall, 1-0 Summit) caught fire in the third stanza, outscoring NDSU, 27-11, to take control of the game and gain a 60-45 advantage at the end of the quarter.
NDSU shot just 30 percent from the field and 31 percent from three-point range in the game and were outrebounded by Omaha, 49-40, marking the first time the Bison have been outrebounded in four games.
Remy Davenport led the Mavs with a game-high 23 points on 6-for-14 shooting.
Omaha shot 42 percent from the field and 36 percent from beyond the arc and posted a 42-24 advantage over NDSU in points in the paint.
North Dakota State is scheduled to host South Dakota State on Sunday, Jan. 3, at 4 p.m. in a Summit League game at Scheels Arena. The contest will be televised statewide on over-the-air channel MeTV.
