Krista Menke tossed her second career no-hitter and
Alyssa Reina returned to the field with a bang as North Dakota State University blanked Green Bay 8-0 in five innings in the opening game of the Ramada UNI-Dome Classic played Friday, Feb. 6.
North Dakota State (1-0) is scheduled to play Drake University at 10:30 a.m. and the University of Iowa at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7.
Menke, a 5-foot-11 senior from Friend, Neb., faced 19 batters over the course of five innings. She struck out 10 batters to reach double-figures for the eighth time in her career. Menke walked four batters and the Bison had one error. Her first no-hitter came against Liberty University in March 2012.
North Dakota State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Senior centerfielder
Alex Sobrero and junior shortstop
Logan Moreland led off with singles and then Reina, the game's third batter, belted a three-run home run to right center. It was the first official at-bat in a year for Reina, who missed last season with an injury.
The inning continued as
Amanda Grable doubled and
Maritza Lopez-Portillo singled to put runners at first and third.
Jackie Stifter reached on an error, advanced to second, while Portillo moved to third and Grable scored. Freshman
Tabby Heinz, in her first collegiate at-bat, finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left.
NDSU scored twice in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-0. Speedy freshman
Katie Shoultz led off with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Sobrero followed with a RBI single and later scored on
Cheyenne Garcia's sacrifice fly.
The Bison closed out the scoring in the top of the fifth. Stifter tripled and scored on a Heinz RBI-single.
North Dakota State claimed nine hits led by Sobrero's 3-for-4 effort, while Heinz had a pair of runs batted in.
