Lawrence Alexander set a single-game school record with eight three-pointers and finished with 31 points to match his career high as the North Dakota State men's basketball team scored a 71-47 victory over South Dakota on Saturday afternoon at Scheels Arena.
Alexander scored the first 15 points of the game for the Bison. He shot 8-of-11 from three-point range in the contest and 11-of-14 overall.
NDSU (17-7 overall, 9-2 Summit League) maintained its spot atop the Summit League standings with the win. The Bison never trailed in the contest on the way to their 23rd straight home victory.
NDSU connected on a remarkable 14-of-22 from beyond the arc, coming within two treys of the team single-game record of 16.
South Dakota (11-14 overall, 5-6 Summit) was out-rebounded 37-21. Junior Tre Burnette led the Coyotes with 10 points.
Alexander made his first six shots, sparking the Bison to an early 10-2 lead and a 35-20 advantage at halftime. NDSU opened the second half on a 10-4 run that featured two treys from
Carlin Dupree and one from Alexander, pushing the margin to 21 at 45-24 with 15:38 left.
Freshman
Paul Miller poured in three three-pointers of his own, tallying 11 points for NDSU. Dupree finished with 10 points and no turnovers.
Kory Brown grabbed 11 rebounds for the Bison – his second time with double-digit rebounds in the last four contests.
Alexander's eight three-pointers broke a logjam in the NDSU record book. Eight different Bison hade made seven treys in a game previously, including Alexander himself on Dec. 3 of this season at Southern Miss.
The Bison return to action on Thursday, Feb. 12, at Denver.
