DES MOINES, Iowa – While neither Alex Renner or Payton Otterdahl walked away with a Drake Relays championship on Saturday, the two underclassmen throwers teamed up to put on the best shot put performance in North Dakota State history.
Renner finished fifth and Otterdahl took seventh place, but it was how they did it that was impressive.
Renner, a sophomore from Watertown, S.D., stepped in the shot put ring first and extended his own school record by an inch to 59-02.75. Otterdahl, a freshman from Rosemount, Minn., came up next and took the school record for himself with a toss of 59-05.00 (18.11m).
Not to be outdone, Renner reclaimed the all-time NDSU best mark on his third attempt, throwing 59-11.75 (18.28m).
In all, the pair combined to surpass the previous school record mark six times on the day. Renner did it on his first four throws, and Otterdahl did twice. Based on marks entering the weekend, Renner and Otterdahl now rank 40th and 46th, respectively, in the NCAA this season.
The top four finishers in Saturday's competition at Drake all rank among the top 30 in the country.
Bison senior Trevor Berner finished seventh in the hammer throw, registering a toss of 190-2 (57.97m).
On the track, Matt Bedard, Landon Jochim, Aron Klos and Jonah Warwick ran 3:24.96 in the 1600m medley relay for the third-fastest time in NDSU history and ninth place in the meet.
Senior Brett Kelly placed fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase, crossing the line in 9:00.85. Junior Brendan Skime took 11th in 9:13.04.
The NDSU shuttle hurdle relay team of Parker McKittrick, Brock Larson, Angus Stoudt and Colin Paarmann qualified to the four-team finals with a time of 59.80. The Bison later improved their time and appeared to claim a third-place finish in 58.08, but they were disqualified for an early start.
NDSU will host the Lyle Hokanson Classic in Fargo on May 1.
