Krista Menke matched The Summit League career wins record as the top-seeded Bison defeated the fifth-seeded South Dakota State Jackrabbits by a score of 16-0 in five innings Friday, May 8, before 224 spectators at the Ellig Sports Complex.
NDSU (41-9) is scheduled to play IUPUI (33-16) at noon Saturday, May 9, in game six at the Ellig Sports Complex. South Dakota (27-24-1) will play the NDSU-IUPUI at 2:30 p.m. The championship game is slated for 5 p.m. Saturday between the game six and game seven winners.
Menke pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning when SDSU filled the bases with a double by Alyssa D'Agostino in between two hit-by-pitches. The senior right-hander struck out the next two South Dakota State batters to end the threat and get out of the inning unscathed.
In the bottom of the second inning NDSU was able to break the game wide open when Alyssa Reina hit a two-run home run to right-center and Katie Shoultz added a two-RBI triple. The Bison brought 13 hitters to the plate in the inning on their way to scoring 10 runs and putting their lead out of reach at 13-0. NDSU would add three more runs before it was over to win the game 16-0 in five innings.
Menke would finish the game with three strikeouts and allowing two hits in three innings of work. It was the senior's 93rd career victory which ties Nicole Terpstra's (DePaul, 1996-99) career mark. She pushed her season strikeout total to 342 to tie Julie Fromm's NDSU single-season record set in 1999.
South Dakota State left seven batters on base in the ball game, including the bases loaded in the first inning. Kaycee Miller contributed the other SDSU base hit other than D'Agostino's double in the first inning.
Reina hit two home runs in the game and drove in a game-high four runs for the Bison. Alex Sobrero, Cheyenne Garcia and Shoultz each added a pair of RBI.
