EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros outscored the North Dakota State University women's basketball team 47-30 in the second half to rally from a three-point halftime deficit and defeat the Bison, 81-67, Monday, Dec. 19, in the UTRGV Battle on the Border at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg, Texas.
Taylor Thunstedt scored 24 points, dished out five assists and went 6-of-12 from the three-point line to lead NDSU, while
Brianna Jones earned her second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Emily Spier and
Kennedy Childers both scored 10 points, rounding out the Bison in double figures.
North Dakota State (2-10) held a 37-26 lead after Jones converted a layup with 2:40 to go in the second quarter, but the Vaqueros (7-6) put together an 8-0 run over the final 2:30 of the stanza to pull within 37-34 going into halftime.
The Bison maintained a lead until UT Rio Grande Valley's Nichele Hyman hit a three with 4:13 remaining in the third quarter to give the Vaqueros a 51-50 lead – an advantage they would not relinquish the remainder of the game.
North Dakota State shot 38 percent from the field, 39 percent from three-point range and 78 percent from the free-throw line in the game.
NDSU and UT Rio Grande Valley both compiled 38 rebounds in the contest, but the Bison committed 17 turnovers which led to 22 Vaquero points.
Shawnte' Goff scored 27 points, and Bernesha Peters tallied 22 points and went 6-of-10 from three-point range to pace UTRGV.
North Dakota State is scheduled to close out play in the UTRGV Battle on the Border Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 4:30 p.m. against UC Santa Barbara.
