NDSU Softball Drops Pair at Texas Classic

AUSTIN, Texas--The University of Arkansas rallied in the seventh inning for an 8-4 win over North Dakota State University in the opener at the Texas Classic, while North Carolina limited the Bison to only one hit for a 9-0 victory in the second game Friday, Feb. 12, at McCombs Field.

NDSU (0-2) has a quick turnaround and will face the same two teams on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Texas Classic. The Bison square off with Arkansas (1-1) at 10 a.m. and then battle the Tar Heels (1-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday.

North Dakota State built a 4-1 lead after five innings against the Razorbacks. Bre Beatty delivered a one out RBI single to right field in the second inning to put the Bison ahead 1-0. After Arkansas tied the score at 1-1, Maritza Lopez-Portillo lined a run-scoring double down the right field line to score Cheyenne Garcia in the top of the fourth.

NDSU extended the advantage to 4-1 in the top of the fifth. Jenna Isbel laid down a bunt single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. Katie Shoultz, who walked following the Isbel steal, advanced to thrid and scored on Garcia's RBI fielder's choice.

Arkansas gained momentum in the bottom of the sixth scored twice to cut the defiict to 4-3, taking advantage of a Madison Yannetti RBI single and bases loaded walk to Tori Cooper.

The Razorbacks tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh when Stephanie Canfield led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Nicole Schroeder's RBI base hit to left center. Hiers took a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left for the grand slam with two outs.

Ashley Diaz, Canfield and Yannetti each had a pair of hits to combine for six of the Razorbacks' nine. Moreland collected a double and single, while Beatty added two base hits.

Jacquelyn Sertic and Kaitlyn "KK" Leddy worked on the mound for NDSU with Leddy picking up the loss in relief. Sertic struck out seven and walked three over the first 5.1 innings. while Leddy walked two with no strikeouts over 1.1 innings. Grace Moll (1-1) went the distance for Arkansas with four strikeouts and two walks.

Kendra Lynch went 2 for 3 at plate and fired a one-hit shutout as North Carolina blanked North Dakota State in the second game. Taylor Wike led the Tar Heels with a two-run double and sacrifice fly, Kristen Brown had a double and single for UNC, while Aquilla Mateen and Lynch each added a pair of hits.

NDSU was limited to Zoe Stavrou's lead-off single in the third inning by Lynch, who struck out seven and walked two over six innings. Leddy (0-2) was tagged with the loss for NDSU. Leddy allowed only three earned runs as the Bison committed three errors. She struck out two and walked one.
