Moreland Blast, Beatty Pinch Hit Lift NDSU Past Cal 6-5 at Hawaii Spring Fling

HONOLULU--Bre Beatty delivered a key pinch-hit and Logan Moreland homered as North Dakota State University outlasted Cal 6-5 on Thursday, March 10, at the Hawai'i Outrigger Spring Fling played at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

NDSU (12-9) is scheduled to play No. 22-ranked Baylor (15-5) at 7:30 p.m. CT and host Hawai'i (13-10) at 10 p.m. CT on Friday, March 11. Baylor and Hawai'i played the late game Thursday.

Cal (11-8) jumped on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first when lead-off hitter Lindsay Rood belted a home run to right field. Rood went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

The Bison answered promptly in the top of the second inning. For the second game in a row, Beatty, a sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev., came through with clutch base hit and collected two runs batted in. Another run scored on an error during the play. Katie Shoultz followed with an infield single to put NDSU ahead 4-0.

The Golden Bears cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the third inning on Jazmyn Jackson's two-run double to center. Jacquelyn Sertic entered the game in relief of starter Kaitlyn "KK" Leddy and notched a strikeout to end the threat.

North Dakota State increased the lead to 6-3 in the top of the fifth when Moreland drilled a two-run home run to left field to score Shoultz. It was the second homer of the season for Moreland.

Sertic (8-3) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth inning. She recorded a strikeout and was aided by Moreland, who fielded a hot shot, won the race to second to record the force out. Sertic struck out five, allowed four hits and walked three over the final 4.1 innings

Cal used a pair of sacrifice flies in the bottom of the seventh by Taurie Pogue and Kobie Pettis to cut the lead to 6-5, but Sertic induced a dribbler to the mound to get the final out.

K Sutherland-Finch, Stephanie Trzcinski and Kristin Cullen pitched for the Golden Bears with Sutherland-Finch picking up the loss. The trio combined to allow six hits, strike out two and walk two.

Zoe Stavrou had a pair of hits to pace the Bison.
