PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The North Dakota State University baseball team used a four-run eighth inning to defeat Western Michigan University, 4-2, on Saturday, March 12, in the Snowbird Baseball Classic at North Charlotte Regional Park.
NDSU (9-4) is scheduled to face Michigan State at 11 a.m. ET (10 a.m. CT) on Sunday, March 13, at North Charlotte Regional Park.
Trailing 2-0 with one-out in the top of the eighth,
Andy Wicklund,
Drew Fearing and
Brayden Resch hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases, before
Ben Petersen smacked a single through the left side to drive in Wicklund and Fearing and tie the game, 2-2. After a Western Michigan (1-12) pitching change,
Mason Pierzchalski belted a towering double just inside the left field fence to plate Resch and give the Bison their first lead of the game, 3-2.
Taylor Sanders drove in Petersen during the next at bat with a sacrifice fly to center, increasing the North Dakota State advantage to 4-2.
NDSU closer
Sean Terres held the Broncos scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the North Dakota State come-from-behind victory.
Pierzchalski went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI to lead the Bison at the plate, while Petersen drove in a pair of runs and went 1-for-4 in the batter's box. Sanders added a double and RBI.
NDSU right-hander
Luke Lind (3-0) tallied his third win of the season after pitching 1.2 innings in relief and allowing one earned run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. Terres picked up his team-high fourth save after allowing no hits or earned runs with two strikeouts over two innings.
Bison starting pitcher
Alex Rogers gave up just one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks in 5.1 innings.
WMU was paced at the plate by Grant Miller, who went 3-for-4 and drove in a run.
Jacob Piechota suffered the loss on the mound for the Broncos after surrendering four earned runs on four hits in a third of an inning.
