FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University baseball team swept a Summit League doubleheader against the IPFW Mastodons on a cold and windy Saturday, April 9, at Newman Outdoor Field, winning game one, 7-1, before rallying to win the night cap, 12-6.

The pair of victories gave NDSU ninth season head coach Tod Brown his 200th win as the Bison skipper and improved North Dakota State's overall record to 14-13 and Summit League mark to 4-7. IPFW fell to 13-18 on the season and 1-10 in league action.

Sophomore infielder Drew Fearing paced the North Dakota State offense in both games, going a combined 4-of-7 at the plate with five runs scored and a pair of runs batted in. The Osakis, Minn., native went a perfect 3-of-3 in the batter's box in the game two victory.

Juan Gamez drove in a team-high five runs in the two contests and tallied a double in game one, while Ben Petersen belted his first home run of the season in NDSU's game one triumph. Brayden Resch tallied two RBIs on two hits, including a double, in the opener.

Bison left-handed starting pitcher Zach Mayo picked up his first win of the season on the mound in game one to improve to 1-3 overall after allowing just one earned run on six hits in six innings with four strikeouts and two walks. Reliever Brian VanderWoude secured his second save of 2016 after giving up no earned runs on four hits in three innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

Southpaw Chris Choles earned his second win of the season in game two to improve to 2-0 after pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Bison jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening game after Gamez's two-run double to left field in the second-inning and Resch's RBI single to right field in the third frame.

After the Mastodons scored a run in the top of the fourth to make it 3-1, NDSU answered with a run of its own in the fifth, increasing its lead to 4-1 after Petersen hit a towering shot over the left field fence.

The Bison added three more runs in the seventh on a Resch fielder's choice, Taylor Sanders RBI single and Mason Pierzchalski sacrifice fly.

In the nightcap, the Bison rallied from a 6-4 deficit after scoring eight runs in the bottom of the eighth-inning. Logan Busch and Fearing were hit by pitches to lead-off the inning before Paul Funk hit a two-strike bunt single to third base to load the bases with nobody out. A two-run fielding error allowed Busch and Fearing to cross home plate and tie the game, 6-6.

Pinch-hitter Danny Regan plated the go-ahead run for NDSU after drawing a bases loaded walk with two outs, before Gamez smacked a two-out RBI single to right-center, allowing Pierzchalski and pinch-runner Jeron Terres to score and build the Bison lead to 9-6. Fearing batted in two more runs on a single to right-center, and Busch scored on a wild pitch to complete the eight-run frame.

Centerfielder Brandon Soat went a combined 5-of-9 at the plate with two RBIs and a homer in game two to lead the Mastodons.

Right-hander Evan Miller (3-3) suffered the loss in game one after allowing four earned runs on five hits in six innings with seven strikeouts and four walks. Closer Jake Weber (2-3) took the loss in the second contest after surrendering eight runs, one earned, on three hits in 2/3 of an inning with three walks.

North Dakota State is scheduled to conclude the three-game league series against IPFW with a single game on Sunday, April 10, at 1 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field.
