Hadley Steffen banged out 10 kills and
Emily Miron connected for eight with a .412 hitting percentage as North Dakota State defeated Bradley University 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-17) in the final match of the NDSU Classic presented by Cambria Hotel and Hampton Inn on Saturday, Sept. 3, before 890 spectators in the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
The Bison recorded their first win of the season to snap a seven-match losing streak dating back to last season. NDSU lost its first match Saturday to Northern Illinois by the score of 3-1 (25-13, 23-15, 25-19, 25-13).
NDSU (1-6) is scheduled to play Montana (1-3) at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, in the opening match of the Cyclone Invitational at Iowa State University. The Grizzlies lost to Gonzaga University on Saturday at Missoula.
A balanced North Dakota State offense caught fire midway in the the first set and went on to hit .333 in the second set and .423 in the third to finish with a season-high .293 hitting percentage compared to .077 for Bradley (2-4).
Steffen, who celebrated her birthday on a high note, reached double-figure kills for the fourth time in seven matches and finished with a .333 hitting percentage (10-2-24). She had three blocks against Bradley and also had a career-high three solo blocks against Northern Illinois. Steffen also added three digs and an ace.
Miron, who was named to the all-tournament team, had eight kills and one error in 17 attacks. The Bison had six team blocks as
Jessica Jorgensen,
Emily Minnick,
Brianna Rasmusson each had two blocks apiece. Ramusson directed the offense with 32 assists, and added three kills, three digs and an ace.
Defensively, NDSU was sparked by
Morgan Morgan and
Abbi Klos, who came up with eight digs.
Erica Haslag led Bradley with nine kills, while Allison Turner chipped in seven kills and four blocks. Afton Sobasky had 16 assists and Abby Ihrke added eight digs.
