Monica Polgar made a match-high seven saves to guide the North Dakota State women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory at Western Illinois University Friday afternoon, Oct. 13, at John Mackenzie Alumni Field.
With the win, North Dakota State improves 6-9-0 overall and 4-1-0 in Summit League play, while Western Illinois drops to 2-11-0 on the season and 1-2-0 in league action.
After a scoreless first-half, the Bison gained a 1-0 lead in the 60th-minute when O'Brien corralled a deflected shot from
Danielle Algera and tapped it into the back of the net. It was O'Brien's team-best fifth goal and Algera's team-high fourth assist of the season.
NDSU increased its advantage to 2-0 in the 75th-minute after Taiwo controlled a pass from
Malana Vachon inside the box and blasted her shot into the goal. It was Taiwo's first collegiate goal and Vachon's second assist of 2017.
For the match, the Bison were outshot, 21-9, but posted a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks taken.
Polgar (6-4-0) earned her sixth win and fourth shutout of the season after giving up no goals in 90 minutes between the posts.
Lauryn Peters led Western Illinois with four shots and two shots on goal.
North Dakota State is scheduled to host Fort Wayne in the final home match of the regular season Sunday, Oct. 22, at noon at Dacotah Field.
