NDSU Baseball Cruises to 10-2 Win Over Omaha

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University baseball team cruised to a 10-2 victory over the Omaha Mavericks in game two of a three-game Summit League series Saturday, April 22, at Newman Outdoor Field.

With the win, the Bison improve to 19-19 overall and 10-7 in Summit League play, while the Mavericks drop to 9-29 on the season and 6-11 in league action.

Freshman Tucker Rohde matched his career-high with three hits, while senior JT Core smashed his second home run of the season to lead NDSU at the plate. Core, Drew Fearing, and Bennett Hostetler each drove in two runs.

Bison right-handed starting pitcher Reed Pfannenstein (4-4) earned the win on the mound after allowing two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks in seven innings of work.

North Dakota State scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to rally from a 2-1 deficit and take control of the game. Core led-off the frame with a line-drive homer over the right field fence, before Rohde and Abercrombie singled, and Hostetler reached on an error, loading the bases. Fearing hit a double on a 3-2 pitch, scoring Rohde and Abercrombie, and Mason Pierzchalski hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Hostetler, putting the Bison in front, 5-2.

NDSU added three more runs in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Abercrombie and a two-run single up the middle from Hostetler, building the Bison advantage to 8-2.

North Dakota State capped its offensive surge with a pair of runs in the sixth on a Core sacrifice fly and Rohde RBI single.

The Bison outhit the Mavs in the contest, 16-6, and turned three double plays.

Infielder Riley Herold compiled a double and drove in a run to pace the Mavericks in the batter's box.

Omaha right-handed starter Corey Binger (3-7) suffered the loss after giving up six earned runs and two unearned runs on seven hits with a walk in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

North Dakota State and Omaha are slated to play the third and final game of the series Sunday, April 23, at 1 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field.
