Brianna Rasmusson had 45 assists and career-high five service aces, but it was her third of three kills that sealed North Dakota State University's 3-1 (25-19, 25-11, 21-25, 26-24) victory over Weber State at Arizona State's Sun Devil Classic played in Wells Fargo Arena. The win was the first for NDSU interim head volleyball coach
Jennifer Lopez, while Rasmusson earned all-tournament honors.
Rasmusson, a 5-foot-10 senior from Fergus Falls, Minn., took the pass from
Abbi Klos and used a one-handed reverse slam in the middle of the court just outside the 10-foot line to record the set and match-deciding point in the 26-24 set four win over the Wildcats.
Weber State (0-3), which lost 3-1 to Boise State in Saturday's first match, had tied set four for the eighth time at 24-all after trailing by three.
Allie Mauch delivered a kill to make it 25-24 to set up the final play. Mauch led a group of three Bison players with 13 kills, hit .261 and added a pair of blocks.
Rasmusson recorded a career-high five service aces and directed the offense that was firing on all cylinders early.
McKenzie Burke and
Erika Gelzinyte each had 12 kills, while
Emily Halverson added nine and hit .500. Burke collected career-highs with three solo blocks and three aces. The Bison outhit Weber State .189 to .112 in the match.
Mikaela Purnell finished with a match-high 26 digs, but received plenty of help from Klos, Gelzinyte and Rasmusson, who each claimed 13 digs.
Amanda Varley and Andrea Hale each had a match-high 17 kills and three blocks to pace Weber State, while Ashlyn Power had 30 assists and Thamires Cavalcanti came up with 21 digs. Varely also had 18 digs, while Hannah Hill added four blocks.
North Dakota State (1-2) is scheduled to host Northern Colorado (0-1) at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1 in the NDSU Classic presented by Hampton Inn & Doubletree by Hilton at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. The Bears host Duke tonight and play at Colorado State on Aug. 28.
